BLACKSHEAR CITY JAIL

1903  Pierce County Courthouse
Masonic Lodge <No Picture Available Yet>

This Gothic style jailhouse built in 1894 is the third of five jails
which have been built in Pierce County. Sometimes referred to as the
"Hanging Jail" because of its daunting tower, no one was ever recorded to
have ever been hanged there. The jail was in full use until the 1920's when
it was replaced by a larger county jail which stood in front of the Pierce
County Courthouse until July 1999 when that jail was torn down. The 1894
jailhouse stands in the park square on Taylor Street. The jail is listed on
the National Registry of Historic Sites.
