UNION SOLDIERS
HELD CAPTIVE IN THE BLACKSHEAR PRISON
When these Union soldiers arrived in Georgia they were most likely imprisoned first at Andersonville. As General Sherman's troops advanced through the heart of Georgia the prisoners were then transferred by rail to the prison in Millen, then to Blackshear on the Atlantic & Gulf Railroad, by way of Savannah. Many were later transported from Blackshear to the prisons in Charleston & Florence, South Carolina. Others traveled by railroad to the prison camp in Thomasville, then to Albany, and finally being marched back to the gates of Andersonville.
