3D Hunting: Trophy Whitetail
Manufacturer: Mcmillan Digital Publishing
Genre: White-tail deer hunting simulation
System Requirements: Win 95, Pentium
100 (recommend 166), 16MB RAM, 100 MB Hard drive space, 4x CD-ROM, Mouse, keyboard,
Windows 95 compatible sound card, DirectX 5.0.
3D Hunting Trophy Whitetail is a deer hunting sim very similar to Sunstorm's Deer Hunter. You begin by selecting one of four weapons: a bolt action 7mm rifle, a lever action .30-30 rifle. a .357 magnum handgun or a bow. Then you choose from one of four areas to hunt: Oregon, New York State, Arkansas or Kentucky. The Oregon and New York hunts are staged in the daytime while the Arkansas and Kentucky scenarios are set in the evening.
Once you have selected your weapon and location you are taken to the hunt screen. Like Deer Hunter and Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter, the game play screen has a first person view. However instead of using an overhead map view to navigate through the woods, you use the arrow keys to walk around. As you walk, the grass crunches beneath your boots so when you get a deer in sight you hold down the shift key to "sneak". As with the other hunting games, wind is a factor as are noise and being seen. You have to carefully work your way through the woods to set up a shot. Like other sims, you are equipped with binoculars and a grunt call. You can also pull up a GPS display to show you where you are in the hunting area. There are also tags you can place to mark a spot which are visible from a long way off.
..When you spot a deer you hit the F4 button to raise your weapon. If you need the scope, you hit F8 which gives you a view similar to a tank commanders sights. You then fire the weapon using the Ctrl key. If you miss, the deer runs away and you might as well start over because you will not see any more deer. If you hit, it will either drop or run off wounded in which case you have to track it down before it leaves the boundaries of the scenario.
Unfortunately, the trophy
room is not very well designed. The deer are broken down into three categories:
does, 8 point bucks and 12 point bucks. The only info the trophy room gives you is how
many deer you have taken in each of the four areas.
THE SCOUTING REPORT
THE PROS:
Decent 3D graphics- this is
the first 3D hunting game to hit the market.
Ability to move around in hunting area- again, first hunting game to use this.
Buck and does.
THE CONS:
Graphics are now (as of
12/98) rather dated.
Some rather bizzare renderings on the deer (out of proportion size-wise).
Clunky user interface- too many keyboard commands.
Limited deer size.
