3D Hunting: Grizzly
Manufacturer: Macmillan Digital Publishing
Price: $19.99
Genre: Grizzly hunting simulation
System Requirements: Win 95, Pentium
120 (recommend 166), 16MB RAM, 100 MB Hard drive space, 4x CD-ROM, Mouse, keyboard,
Windows 95 compatible sound card, DirectX 5.0, Modem.
3D Hunting: Grizzly is the
follow-up to Macmillan's 3D Hunting: White-tailed Deer and looks very similar- except for
the fact that deer don't try to track YOU down for a mauling! 3D Grizzly gives you the
opportunity to take on one of nature's nastiest game animals in four different locations
in North America. Be afraid...very afraid.
While this member of the 3D Hunting family offers little in the way of graphical
enhancements or innovations 3D Grizzly does offer MULTIPLAYER features (the first hunting
game to do so)!! Now you and a friend can enjoy co-operative hunts and in 3D Grizzly you
will need the help when tackling the most difficult location/scenario: The Man-Eater.
While the other locations offer standard hunting environments (the sites include Alberta,
Alaska and Yukon), the Man-Eater pits you against a ravaging monster grizzly bent on
killing you! So much for shooting down helpless deer. Adding to the hunt environment are
the weather effects which appear in each hunting location (i.e. snow, rain, thunder and
lightning).
Weapon options are simple enough: bolt-action rifle, lever-action rifle and bow. Players
also get a .45 auto pistol as a "side arm"- just in case you run out of ammo and
the yogi is looking to turn you into fertilizer. While there are no calls, the other
hunting features include bait, a tracking dog and camouflage (for bow hunters only).
Scopes and binoculars are again standard issue.
3D Grizzly is a new spin on a already tried (and obsolete) 3D gaming engine. Yet, where
else are you going to hunt (and be hunted) by a PC game animal like the grizzly? While not
graphically "cutting edge", 3D Grizzly is a challenging and at times thrilling
hunt.
The Scouting Report
THE PROS:
Ability to hunt grizzlies.
Man-eater scenario is pretty cool.
Side arm weapon is a nice (and necessary) feature.
Multi-player feature.
THE CONS:
Dated 3D graphics engine.
Terrain looks ugly.
Occasional crashes off the main menu.
