Big game hunting simulation
System Requirements:  Win95, Pentium 75 or faster, 16 MB RAM, Mouse, CD-ROM, Sound Card, Direct X, 30 MB HDD space.

DESCRIPTION:  Cabela's Big Game Hunter is sort of like Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter, Deer Hunter and  Wild Turkey Hunter combined.  You can hunt 16 species of animals using 9 different types of weapons in four  unique scenarios. The scenarios include: The Piedmont, The Bitteroot, The Dakota and The Yukon.  This game can be more involved that RMTH or Deer Hunter in that you can go to the lodge and purchase all  the equipment that you would need for a hunt.

...      You browse through a Cabela's catalog and purchase such items as boots, tents, survival gear, licenses etc.    If you want there is also a "Quick Start"  option that outfits you with the bare necessities for the hunt and takes you directly to your campsite. There is a unique guide for each of the four locations who gives you advice and helps you spot animals.  At your campsite, you are asked to choose one of 5 or 6 hunting stands depending on the scenario. So unlike Deer  Hunter and RMTH you don't track animals through the woods you pretty much wait for them to come to you.  After picking your stand the guide asks what kind of animal you wish to hunt.  He then suggests a   weapon based on your choice of game.  You can pick any weapon at any time, but it's a good idea to listen to your guides advice.

TheTo hunt you move the mouse between about a dozen preset landmarks until an animal appears.  When one does, a live action video screen pops up and your weapon is raised.  You only have a second or two to aim and fire before the animal flees.  If you are successful another video shows the animal stumble and fall.  Miss and you get to watch as he runs away. ...

After a successful kill, a trophy screen is displayed showing info on your animal as well as any reward you may have received.  For a successful kill you get money that can be used for more equipment ( I got $1011 for a bison). The trophy log book for that animal is then displayed so you can see how your animal stacks up.

CABELA'S SPECIAL PERMIT

Manufacturer:  Headgames/Activision (1998)
Price:
$14.99
Genre:
Expansion pack for Cabela's Big Game Hunter
Requirements: Registered copy of Cabela's Big Game Hunter

Special Permit is an expansion pack for Cabela's Big Game Hunter much like Extended Season was for Deer Hunter.  Special Permit has nine new weapons, 50 new video shots and a new region the Teton.  In this scenario, you have supposedly won a "special permit" lottery to hunt in one of the four regions.  The Piedmont, Yukon and Dakota regions return from Big Game Hunter with new layouts and new hunting stands.  Several new bolt action rifles are included as well as a lever action rifle, handgun, 45-70 Sharps rifle and two new bows.  There are also a few new accessories you can purchase at the lodge and a new guide for the Teton region.

.....Because this is supposed to represent a special permit hunt there are fewer species of game available for hunting.  You once again have a five day guided hunt, but it seldom takes longer than  two or three days.  The new video is excellent, some scenes show an animal obscured by brush or trees so you have to be more careful than in Big Game Hunter.
