Deer Hunter is, just as the title says, a deer hunting sim. It is a first person shooter game (al la QUAKE, Duke Nukem, Doom) which puts the player in the boots of the hunter. The player can choose any one weapon (bow, rifle, or shotgun) and up to three pieces of equipment (tree stand, cover scent, attractant) before embarking on the hunt. Players then navigate around in a 1.5x1.5 mile area (the map screen) searching for signs of recent deer activity (scrapings, bedding, droppings, rubbings). This can be something of a "cat and mouse" game as the player attempts to scout hot spots while staying downwind. Once a sign is found, the player heads into the hunting screen.

. ..     In the hunting screen the player scouts the immediate area using binoculars or plain old eyesight while using calls and antler rattles to coax nearby bucks within shooting range. Again, this can be very tricky since the deer can easily spook and quickly run off. As in the map screen, wind direction can either make or break a successful hunt.   After bagging a buck, the deer's head is mounted in the trophy room. A maximum of five trophies may hang on the trophy wall. A short history about each trophy is listed near each hanging.

    Deer Hunter gives players the choice of three hunting locations (Arkansas Autumn, Colorado Alpine, Indiana Winter)  and a target range where players can hone their shooting skills.

Requirements: Must own a registered copy of Deer Hunter in order to use Extended Season.

The expansion gives players new hunting locations (Nebraska Winter, Kentucky Fall, Adirondack Mountains) and a new weapon (blackpowder muzzle loader) while adding more bucks to the game. Each location is now given a rating showing the number/frequency of deer; the lower the rating, the bigger the bucks and the harder they are to find.
    There is also some enhancements in the graphics and a map editor utility which allows players to create new hunting grounds for the game. .
