OVERVIEW: The Links series has always been one of the most popular in PC gaming for years. While not a big golf nut, I enjoyed playing the old Links 386 and LS alot. So when I was loading Links LS 1999 onto my hard drive I was pretty excited- the screen shots on the box looked great and I was eager to play on Old St. Andrews. I was also hoping that this latest version of Links wouldn't be a letdown.
I wasn't let down in the least! Links LS 1999 is the best Links game yet and I believe it to be the best golf sim ever developed for the PC. I mean this game IS golf! From the stunning photo quality graphics to the Powerstroke swing feature Links LS 1999 is a winner. Links 99 offers great physics and gameplay- you will not find a better golf game unless you are actually on the course.
Links 99 features four courses: Latrobe (spring and fall), Entrada, Bay Hill and Old St. Andrews. The addition of "the birthplace of golf" (St. Andrews) was a coup. It's a challenge dealing with the pot bunkers while the sound of bagpipes squeals in the background. Man, I LOVE that course!! Links 99 renders each course so well that it's almost like being there. Links 99 also works with the old 386 courses and the LS course libraries, the game converts them to the new graphic format. That's even better- I didn't waste my money on all of those add-on course from years past!
The swing method consist of three types: the traditional 3 click, the 2 click and Powerswing. I liked Powerswing the best- it represents the swing better than any other mouse swing interface while not being too easy or too hard. Besides, it works on a standard mouse pad! Also included are features which allow you to add your own .wav files into the game and a zillion different golf game rules. Links 99 is truly the complete golf game. Multi-player is also supported via IP/Internet.
Frankly, I couldn't find anything negative about the game. Everything worked, looked good and played fine. Look no further than Links LS 1999 if you want the finest golf game for the PC.
