PANZER GENERAL 2

Developed by: SSI/Mindscape (1998)
Genre: Grand Tactical World War Two game
System Requirements: Windows 95, P 90+, CD ROM, 16 MB RAM, Mouse, Modem.

OVERVIEW: Panzer General 2 is the highly anticipated follow-up to SSI/Minscape's excellent Panzer General. Part of the "Living Battlefield Series" (which also includes People's General), Panzer General 2 more than exceeds expectations on just about every front. It's truly a wargamer's delight.

The one thing I didn't like about Panzer General 1 was the rather bland terrain and the fuzzy unit size. The guys at SSI/Mindscape really solved both of those problems by designing the best terrain I have ever seen (apparently "hand painted" and I believe it) and truly giving some definition to the unit size: now you're looking at regimental/battalion sized units for the most part. Way to go SSI/Mindscape!

Like I said, the terrain is some of the best you'll ever see for a game of this scale. The detail is absolutely unbelievable! The actual unit graphics are also well rendered- but the terrain is something to behold! It's almost photrealistic. But enough on that already!

Gameplay is pretty straightforward- one uses a mouse to move units/elements about the map. The toolbar offers all sorts of options and is easy to follow. Nothing truly innovative, just solid mechanics and interfaces. The game offers a slew of European Theater scenarios ranging from the Spanish Civil War to the Russian invasion of Finland to more classic battles like St. Lo, Ardennes, Tobruk and East Front. With the built-in multiplayer option one can battle it out with friends (and enemies) via modem or internet play.

Panzer General 2 is a sure bet to win some gaming awards this year. It's a must for any wargaming fan.
